The Mid-Autumn Festival has a long history. It originated from the worship of the moon by ancient emperors. In ancient times, people believed that the full moon in autumn symbolized harvest and completeness.
During the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD), the Mid-Autumn Festival became an official festival. Families would get together, enjoy mooncakes, and admire the full moon.
The legend of Chang'e flying to the moon is also closely related to this festival. Chang'e was the wife of Hou Yi. After she swallowed the elixir of immortality, she flew to the moon and lived there ever since.
